Colorful church in Chonchi

We weren’t sure how the day was going to turn out.

We decided not to book an excursion through the Seabourn desk and see what we could achieve on our own at hopefully a less expensive rate.

After we tendered into the centre of the town square of Castro, Isla Chiloe we took a look at the impressive and colorful church in the town square and asked ourselves what do we do now.

Houses in the water on stilts are a characteristic of the region

Today was not going to be a shopping day according to anyone’s interests.

After some frustration the tourist office helped us hire a van for six to take us to the Cucua Chiloe National Park, at least an hour away.

It proved to be a spectacular drive along lakes, through small towns, and through some of the densest forest you have ever seen.

Following the Chilean Lakes and Fjords to the park.

At the end of it all the park was a worthwhile walk through even though the ladies decided at some point a glass of wine at the hostel in the park was a worthwhile stop.

We kept on going until more spectacular scenery unfolded before us and we discovered, like parks in Canada, that accommodation has been set up so families can discover the magic of their own country.

As host of 10 other couples on this trip, one of the events we include is a complimentary cocktail evening to help everyone meet and get to know each other better.

In a few days in Punta Arenas we will set out on the complimentary excursion we also include.

Tonight was Russian night in one of the ships restaurants and the Ukrainian in all of us decided that was where we would dine. Gord, who is not Ukrainian was adopted into the culture a long time ago.

Borscht, beef stroganoff, and vodka laced strawberries gave and excellent start to the evening.

In a few days we will also land in the Falkland Islands and take a long days excursion to see the penguins. We have booked our own off ship private tour so we are somewhat concerned about getting back on time and not being left behind because of a broken axle or other similar mishap.

But we will be travelling at half the price of the ship’s excursion and that makes it seem like it is worth the risk.

Join us on next years hosted cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore aboard the Seabourn Legend.  With stops in Thailand and Vietnam, it promises to be another excellent experience.
